If Iceberg lettuce grows by adding leaves on the outer ball then, the pesticides used to protect it will need a good washing off.
On the flip side If the stuff grows from the inside causing the outer leaves to continually expand then only the outer few leaves are suspect.
any one know?

Re: Iceberg: wash or not?
Thu, July 9, 2009 - 5:05 PMlettuce fills its head from the inside, and so removing a few outer leaves should do the trick. leaf lettuces (chicories, mustards, brassicas, and mesclun mixes are yummy) rarely have pests as far as my experience goes growing them for 20+ years. pesticide use is unnecessary for growing food, try floating row covers to protect from insects.
I like your question. -
