Greetings. I'd like to pose a question for those of you in this tribe.
I'm 33 and have always grown up with a garden in the backyard... always had a "green thumb" as it were. In high school i opted out of the last two years of a catholic education and joined a career center where i took up horticulture and landscape construction. Since the time i graduated i've been working with the same partner and we've done pretty well for ourselves ,yep just the two of us doing over 300k a year (in contracts) here in Ohio. My question to you is this....
...Do you think there's a market for "Contract Gardening"?
By this i mean homeowners would contract to have a garden created.. tilled, fertilized(organic), planted, and cared for (weeded, natural pest control, etc.) on their land. I know a lot of you may do the "dirty work" yourselves .. but my idea will be geared more to the elderly ,urban families ,or green minded individuals. Of course, my theories and ideas have an Ohio base... but i'd like to hear from anyone.. any area or zone.
Please feel free to input any information you're willing to share.
Than you

Re: Contract Gardening
Fri, March 13, 2009 - 4:50 PMin Portland, oregon... I get the feeling that either they already ARE gardening, or are just too busy to even want to try...
deffinately a thought though; and it might be a better thought then I'd guess, and perhaps in a few years- not in this economy?
What I have done for a handful of ideas that I *wondered* about, was put a post on craigslist, and see how many random flies bit. true, that's just a sample of the craigslist crowd, but then at least you know if that marketing scheme will work at all, and if people would even inquire...

Re: Contract Gardening
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 7:20 AMA number of folks are doing this in SE Portland, for clients who either (a) don't have the skills, (b) don't have the time or (c) want the status of displaying a beautiful garden. There are CSA's that work by pooling various folks' yards, gardeners who will plan and execute food gardens with you and trainer/consultants who teach. One nearby is urbanfarmschool.wordpress.com and the business is definitely not lucrative. -

Re: Contract Gardening
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 4:50 PMHey bro. I started an organic gardening company. I have not had too many projects yet but the concept is to teach people to live off their land. I live in phoenix arizona. I compost all their green waste, build them a compost bin, make their own fertilizer from green waste from restaruants(i am a chef in the valley also). People are really going to catch on. I also have outlets to sell their produce at all of the farmers markets like a community farm only i do the work and get paid for it. My website is sustainablyyou.com. -
