Hey guys, need advising.
A recent cleaning uncovered a bottle of Kirkland calcium tablets with Vitamin D,Magnesium and zinc. The stuff's the carbonate, which I don't take, so I have no plans for consuming them; also, the expiration date was in 2006.
So, initially I thought about grinding them up and watering my rosebushes on occasion, but I would be interested to know if I can use this on my veggie garden. Since they are for ingesting I'd figure they are safe enough, but I rather get some opinions on this. Maybe there's something in the stuff that would make it dirt-unfriendly.
Thanks in advance :)

Re: question on calcium
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 7:11 PMcould you toss it in your compost, and let it filter the pills before you put them on your plants? -

Sun, February 8, 2009 - 8:02 PMit's amazing the evils that a compost will cover up...
besides, think of how much less garbage you'll have... -

Mon, February 9, 2009 - 12:49 AMOh agreed--I rent where I am now and just do a trench system with my kitchen garbage or dig a hole and throw a board over the top. My neighbor's got a chicken wire bin installed that looks promising and easier to deal with come moving time. -

Re: question on calcium
Mon, February 9, 2009 - 12:03 PMThat's exactly what I did with the same pills last summer when my tomatoes started showing signs of calcium deficiency. It worked great and I didn't compost them first, only ground them in my mortar and pestle, and sprinkled it directly on the soil before watering.
Then I found out that saving and grinding my eggshells does the same job, so I have a mountain of eggshells. Some I chip up and feed to the chickens with their grit and some I will put into the soil this season.
